How to start?

Today we live among so much stress, everything has to be fast, technology is overwhelming, the workload is higher, traffic on the street, someone in a bad mood wants to ruin our day, anyway, so many things we go through and one by one will boil in.  At the end of the day we want a little bit of peace, quiet, to place our thoughts in order.  I always thought there’s nothing like a good hobby to help us release all those pent up emotions.  And we focus so much and with such passion that we engage and problems are outside.  You relax and release it without effort.  I hope everyone has a little free time to pursue what they love, because it seems incredible but is an effective remedy for stress.

In my case the best hobby is philately.  There are many more experienced than I that define it, but in summary, is the hobby of collecting and studying stamps.

Would you like to start your collection?  Go ahead!  What are you waiting?  Do not be overwhelmed by ANYTHING!!

Let’s start with the album.  The choice of an album is important for the future of the collection.  It should not be an accumulation of stamps pasted side by side, like sardines in overcrowded pages, not a luxury item where the presentation will surprise as the content.

Of course, it all depends on what you want to collect...  If you are ambitious and you begin a world collection, the choice is quite simple.

For a child or adult who starts, there is a high potential in a very wide range of prices and assortment.  But when you’re a child, you don’t have an income to see what you can afford.  And an adult will think a lot if the options are too expensive or finds it very expensive for not giving it a serious thought.

When I started, my mom was very practical, she gave me a small notebook of hundred pages and I pasted the stamps in order by year of issue.  At that time the stamps were only from Honduras.  I got used to that method for a long time, and it worked wonderfully, until a disaster changed my mind.

My mom kept her notebooks in a wooden bookshelf, sometimes several months passed by without the opportunity to add something to the collection.  Without realizing a plague of termites invaded the bookshelf, and with such bad luck for my mom’s collection, they ate without reservations the notebook where she had placed all of her Asian stamps.  I think we even cried of the amount of stamps lost.

Following this terrible nightmare, I decided to place my books in a metal box.  And I began to undo all my notebooks.  With patience, putting all the stamps in the metal box, preventing termites on finding my treasure.  Then I decided that the best thing was to find something else to keep my stamps safe and my solution was to put them in plastic bags.  Those plastic sheets used for filing.  Once neatly packed, place the sheets in a folder.

My story can help you take certain precautions. If you buy a world album, make sure is not bound.  You will have to continually add pages to make room for more stamps.  You can create your album to your own taste and with what you have on hand.

In addition, to save space, the albums released classify tight lines of stamps of the same format, losing the elementary notion of showing and having the entire series.  The truth, these albums are quite expensive and an interested person might hesitate if concerned in not spending too much.

Ultimately, it is cheaper to make yourself the album, taking a catalog as a guide and graph paper.  In any case, the making of the album on your own provides great satisfaction, besides many other advantages, but primarily the economy.  An additional pleasure, is to determine on your own the placement of the pages and above all, the ultimate Freedom, nobody is giving you guidelines!!
